Teaching-

This Sunday I went to Church Unlimited and also reviewed the verses from this day’s Mass.

From the Mass we read-

Psalm 25:12 What man is he that feareth the LORD? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.

Psalm 25:13 His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth.

Psalm 25:14 The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.

This came from the Psalm for this Sunday.

From the gospel we read-

Mark 1:14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,

Mark 1:15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Mark 1:16 Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

Mark 1:17 And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.

Mark 1:18 And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.

Mark 1:19 And when he had gone a little farther thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.

Mark 1:20 And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.

The calling of 4 of the apostles- they left their business [Fishermen]- which in the region of Galilee was one of the best jobs you could have.

Yet- they had to leave their worldly pursuits behind- if they wanted to follow Jesus.

From Church Unlimited we read of the temptation of Jesus by satan-

Matthew 4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

Matthew 4:2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

Matthew 4:3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Matthew 4:5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

Matthew 4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Matthew 4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Matthew 4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

Matthew 4:9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

Matthew 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Part of the temptation was to gain notoriety and success- by being disobedient to the plan of God.

I also quoted a verse on video- which my daughter found while we were talking-

Jeremiah 17:12 A glorious high throne from the beginning is the place of our sanctuary.

This scripture speaks of a ‘place’- or position that was destined for us- from the start.

But it does seem strange in a way ‘a glorious high throne’?

It almost sounds like one of the temptations from satan-

Matthew 4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

Matthew 4:9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

Yet in scripture we read that those who have died with Christ- have been raised- and also seated WITH HIM in heavenly- or high places-

Ephesians 2:6

And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

This position is for those who are in Christ.

Yet- they must first die.

The challenge for the 4 disciples Jesus called was to leave behind [die] to worldly ambitions- and follow him.

If they do this- there is a promise that he will show them something of great value- something that others who do not follow him will not see.

What will it be?

How will they see these things?

Well- that was another reading from the Mass-

John 3:1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

John 3:2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

John 3:4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?

John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

A teacher- a leader- comes to Jesus by night- and as the true teacher begins instructing him- he is not able to grasp spiritual truth- and receives a rebuke from the Lord-

John 3:9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?

John 3:10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?

He has taken upon him a position of being a teacher- which the brother of Jesus in his one letter warns against-

James 3:1

My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

Because if you claim to have a voice to the community- and take it lightly- you will be judged more severely.

So Nicodemus earned the rebuke because he was not able to see the kingdom- at this stage.

It will require a forsaking of all that he thought to be true and right- and an embracing of the Son himself-

Something another former pharisee learned the hard way-

Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more:

Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;

Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.

But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.

The disciples made a choice that day along the shore of Gallilee- they left behind their worldly desires and chose to follow him.

What will be the great revelation that they will receive?

The promise from the psalmist that we started with-

he will shew them his covenant.

He will sit down with them- and show them this covenant-

26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.

27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;

28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Yes- to see this- and know it- is to truly see the kingdom. [Some sites see here  https://ccoutreach87.blogspot.com/2024/01/sunday-sermon-text_21.html ]
