Judas comes with the guards to take Jesus.
Jesus asks ‘who are you here for’?
They reply ‘Jesus’.
Jesus ‘I AM he’.
They fall backward to the ground.
John 18:5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.
John 18:6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.
Huh?
The get up- and Jesus says-
‘Who are you here for- I told you I’m he- let these go away’.
As far as I can tell this is the only incident in the gospels where Jesus used the power he had- to actually cause sinful men to fall down.
Why?
The bible says ‘this happened so it might be fulfilled that Jesus lost none’.
Ok- when did Jesus say that?
The last chapter- John 17.
John 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
I think we see here how Jesus word- which he just prophesied a chapter before- was going to come to pass- regardless of the intentions of men.
It seems as if the guards were going to arrest them all-
It made no sense for them to simply come and get Jesus- then let his followers continue the movement.
No- they figured they would stop the movement in one shot.
But Jesus had something else in mind- and he showed them that they had no power over him- and he was only allowing them to take him- because this was the ‘cup’ the Father chose for him.
John 18:11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
We read that Peter and ‘the other disciple’ followed Jesus to the high priest’s court.
That other disciple is John.
Don’t forget- this is John’s gospel- so- he knew what happened in the court- because he was the only disciple there.
The other gospel writers don’t record this incident.
Now- I read something that seemed a bit interesting.
We all know about the famous denials of Peter-
But how exactly did it occur?
We read that John spoke to the woman at the door- and she goes and gets Peter.
John 18:15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.
John 18:16 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
John 18:17 Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man’s disciples? He saith, I am not.
Huh?
Yeah- it seems as in if John was saying ‘ok Peter- you said you were the big shot of the group- though we all forsake Jesus- you would not. But look now- I’m in here with Jesus- known to the high priest- and your outside- at the door’.
Yes- it seems as if John told the lady to go get Peter.
And we all know what happened- Peter swares he is not a follower- denies the Lord 3 times- and the rooster crows.
And maybe John gets a quick look at Peter- you know- sort of like ‘Who’s the big shot now?’
Ok- Jesus goes before the high priest- gets questioned- and then gets sent to Pilate.
Pilate asks him if he is the king of the Jews- if he is really a king.
John 18:33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?
Jesus at the end of the discourse says he is a king- for this purpose he came- but his kingdom is different.
It’s not ‘of this world’.
John 18:36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
Or else his men would have fight.
But his kingdom was not about an armed insurrection- it was about him dying for the world- and starting a kingdom movement of men who would follow in his steps.
Who would die to their own desires- and live for the King who died for them- and rose again.
